The Facial Nerve (CN7)
The bony canal containing the facial nerve can be followed on axial and coronal CT images. This section provides a basic approach for identifying and tracing the course of the facial nerve through the temporal bone.

Greater Superficial Petrosal Branch
Additionally, from the geniculate ganglion, the greater superficial petrosal nerve can be seen branching anteriomedially through the facial hiatus

The greater superficial petrosal nerve is responsible for lacrimation, by way of the pterygopalatine ganglion, as well as taste in the palate
