The Facial Nerve (CN7)
The bony canal containing the facial nerve can be followed on axial and coronal CT images. This section provides a basic approach for identifying and tracing the course of the facial nerve through the temporal bone.

Intracanalicular and Cisternal Segments
The intracanalicular and cisternal segments are best visualized on MRI.
Remember, in the anterior internal auditory canal (IAC), CN 7 is superior and the cochlear nerve inferior
“seven up, coke down”
The vestibular branches of CN 8
(superior and inferior) are posterior and “keep you from falling back”
