The Facial Nerve (CN7)
The bony canal containing the facial nerve can be followed on axial and coronal CT images. This section provides a basic approach for identifying and tracing the course of the facial nerve through the temporal bone.

Posterior Genu
The posterior genu marks the transition between mastoid and tympanic segments.
Note the relationship of the facial nerve to the pyramidal eminence and sinus tympani.
A lesion involving the sinus tympani requires a retrofacial/posterior surgical approach.
