The Facial Nerve (CN7)
The bony canal containing the facial nerve can be followed on axial and coronal CT images. This section provides a basic approach for identifying and tracing the course of the facial nerve through the temporal bone.
 
Snake Eyes
Continue anterior to the “snail” of the cochlea to find the “snake eyes”, representing the distal labyrinthine and proximal tympanic segments.
Slightly more anterior
labyrinthine and tympanic segments meet at the anterior genu/geniculate ganglion (not shown)
